How to Setup a WordPress Website in 10 Minutes

We have previously mentioned the many benefits of blogging.  As a result, we have had quite a few questions on the step by step process for setting up your own blog.  Below we walk through each step (in great detail) to get your own blog setup in 10 minutes.

Step 1 – Register Your FREE Domain Name Using BlueHost

There are a variety of companies out there that will host your website.  We have tried several and recommend BlueHost to both register the domain name and host the website.  They make the process very simply with 1 click installs of WordPress, high available hosting, greats speeds and customer support.  We are in the process of switching our other hosting sites from HostMonster over to BlueHost.

To get started, click the green “get started now” button.


This will bring you to the sign-up page.  You can either register a new domain or transfer an existing domain (if you already have a website).


 We recommend registering a new domain name in this step, even if you already have a website, since you can get 1 domain name for free (an $11.99 value).  Simply type your desired domain name in the box and click the next button.


Hopefully you domain name will be available.  If it is, fill out your contact information in the top section of the next page.


In the next section you will have the ability to select information about your plan.  To get the cheapest monthly plan ($4.95/month), select the 36 month plan.  If you want to select a shorter plan, you can do a 24 month plan for $5.95/month or a 12 months plan for $6.95/month).

There are several other add-on options available that you can purchase.  We typically do not purchase any of them, but you may want to consider some of them depending on your business.  One that applies to everyone may be the Site Backup Pro.  It is very important to backup your website so that you do not lose all of your information if it ever crashes.  One easy way is to purchase Site Backup Pro for $1.67/month.  Otherwise, there are plugins that you can install and configure to backup your website.  Either way, we highly recommend making sure your website is backed up.


In the final section, enter your payment details and click the next button.  You will now be the owner of a brand new domain name.  Congratulations!



Step 2 – Install WordPress with 1 Click

WordPress is by far the best choice for creating your blog or business website.  If you are not familiar with WordPress, it is a content management system (CMS) that is used by millions of other websites.  It provides you a lot of features to make it easy to create your blog.  Additionally, there are a lot of plugins (both free and paid) available to add additional features and functionality to your website.

One of the reasons that we recommend using BlueHost is that it offers an easy way to install WordPress.  When you login, locate the Install WordPress icon and click it.


You will be redirected to a site with some information about WordPress.  Click the Start button to get started with the install.


 The next screen will allow you to select a domain name to install WordPress to.  Select your website and click the Check Domain button.


 For the last step, you just need to fill out some basic information about your website.  Make sure the “Show advanced options” is checked.

Site Name or Title: Enter the name of your website

Admin Username: Enter the username that you will use to login and maintain the website

Admin Password: Enter the password that you will use to login and maintain the website

Admin Email Address: Enter the email address that you will use with this website (Tip – Check out this article on how to create an email address at your new domain name.  You can either do it now or enter another email address and change it later)

Be sure to check the “Automatically create a new database for this installation” check box

Check the “I have read the terms and conditions of the GPLv2”

Finally, click the “Install Now” button to complete the installation.


Step 3 – Change Your Theme

One of the great things that separates modern websites and really provides a lot of flexibility is the ability to separate your content from how it looks on the website.  Wordpress does this by installing different themes.

When we first created our website, the default theme was “Twenty Fourteen” theme that comes with WordPress (seen below).


After installing a new theme and doing some setup, you can see that our website looks completely different.


If you would like to install your own custom theme, below are some places that offer WordPress themes.  Some offer free themes, while other charge.  We actually purchase themes for all of our websites as they are relatively low-cost, look great and are easy to maintain.  If you are interested in free WordPress themes, check out this list of free themes.

Gorilla Themes

We mention Gorilla Themes first as we are using on of their templates for this website.

Cost Per Theme: $49.95, $69.95, $99.95 (one time fee) depending on your needs
Our Comments: With several themes to choose from, there is something for everyone.  Each theme looks different from the others and the designs seem to really focus on the needs to the people who would be using the theme.  In using one of the themes, we have found some nuances (such as which image is used for the thumbnail), but there is a support forum to ask questions and the developer typically responds within a day.



Elegant Themes

We have used Elegant Themes for 2 of our other websites, Sylvester Enterprises and Warsaw Wine & Spirits.

Number of Themes: 87+
Cost Per Theme: $39 (per year) for access to all themes
Our Comments: These were the first themes that we purchased.  We liked the option of being able to use any of the 87+ themes that are available.  The themes cover various different niches and industries.  Overall, they seem to be less busy than some of the other theme websites.

We have only used the above 2 websites, but there are others that are pretty popular among bloggers.  Below are a few that you might want to check out.



Install Your Theme

One you find the theme that you want to use, follow the instructions below to install and begin using the theme on your website.

Navigate to (ex. to login to the administration panel.  Make sure to bookmark this page for future use.

Highlight over the “Appearance” menu and click the “Themes” sub-menu.


This will bring you to the page that shows all if your installed themes.  Click the “Add New” button to install your new theme.


On the next screen, select the “Upload” link to select and upload your theme from your computer.


Once your theme is installed, simply navigate back to the Appearance -> Themes menu.  From there you can preview what your website looks like with the theme and also activate it to start using your new theme.


Step 4 – Publish Your First Post

So at this point you have your domain registered, you installed WordPress and you installed a template.  The final step is to publish your first post.  To do so, hover over the “Posts” menu and click “Add New”.


Fill out a title for your post and type the text for your post in the area below.  Once you are satisfied with your post, click the “Publish” button on the right side to publish your new blog post.
