One of the things that I really enjoy doing is crafting, but it is not always easy to do between managing the businesses and entertaining a two year old.  The good things is I have had 2 years to practice.

1. Get a Pinterest account! is one of the best ways to keep a running to do list of your crafting ideas. It is also one of the best places to find great and easy DIY projects. Find a picture online of something you want to try? Pin it so you can go back to it at a later date. Great for seasonal projects and gift ideas too! Then when you have some free time and want to do a project, you can (somewhat) quickly find one on your online boards.

Tip: Install the Pin It Button (for Google Chrome) or the Pin It Bookmark (for other internet browsers) to be able to pin images from ANY website.  Simply go to the Pinterest Goodies page.

2. Get to know your local craft stores!

The best way to get a project done in a short time is to prepare ahead of time. Knowing your store layouts will make it easier for you to get in and out quickly. And if you don’t mind spending a little up front, you can pick up a basic collection of crafting supplies so you’re well stocked for starting anything.

3. Practice the basics

Take any opportunities to practice your crafting skills. Get the glue gun out, use some paint. Find opportunities to try new skills and then use them whenever you can. Crafting supplies are usually pretty inexpensive, so don’t worry if your first crafts don’t come out perfectly. They will get better with time.

4. Have a crafting priority list

Keep in mind some of the projects you want to do. If you have a top 5 in mind, you will have an easier time picking a project on short notice. It also makes it easier to shop if you know what projects you have in mind ahead of time.

5. Know your limits

There are some DIY projects that you will fall in love with, but they may not be a practical or feasible choice for you. Know what you can manage and stick with it. Trying ideas that require too much or techniques that are very complex will just make you disappointed when the finished product doesn’t live up to expectations. There is nothing wrong with trying something new or different, but don’t go overboard.

Crafting is a fun hobby, and for some can even become a personal art form. It gives you a sense of creativity and pride in doing something for yourself. Homemade crafts make great gifts for family and friends, and can allow you to decorate your house on a budget. You can find others who love to craft, join social groups or throw your own “Pinterest Party”. And with these basic steps it will make it that much easier for you to give it a try!
